Same Pond

A similarity map for your own things

Same PondWhich of your things are secretly alike?

Write a few of your things and what each one has. They float on a pond as lily pads: the more they share, the closer they drift. Clumps, loners and the closest pair are free. One run adds the pond keeper's notes.

4 The keeper's notes

One run writes a short note on what ties each clump, why each loner floats alone and what the closest pair share. The page has already decided the clumps; it checks every note against your ticks.

      How it works

Two things are as alike as the traits they share, out of all the traits either has: a flask and a travel cup that share two of four traits are 50% alike. A clump is a group where every pair is at least 50% alike; the strongest groups form first, and a tie goes to the group listed first. Anything left over floats alone, and the frog sits between the closest pair.

The map works like UMAP: each thing's few nearest neighbours pull hardest, every other pair keeps a loose distance, and the start is a fixed circle, so the same ticks always draw the same pond. Nearby pads are similar; the distance between far-apart groups means little.

Lines with an email, phone number, handle or web address are kept back and never sent. The keeper's notes may only use your names and the traits you ticked - the page flags any note that adds a number, a trait a thing does not have, or drops the trait a clump shares first.
